In today's information age, dealing with the overwhelming amount of
information readily available is an important challenge for individuals
and organizations. Current database and information retrieval systems
enable users to quickly obtain vast amounts of data in textual form –
but a serious bottleneck remains: Users still need to read, interpret,
and use the collected information, be they emails, web pages, research
papers, or other documents. Recently, semantic support has started to
materialize in tools and desktop environments like word processors or
email clients. Examples for such support include auto summaries of text
documents and classification of emails with respect to their priority,
type, data sensitivity, and topic. This support is based on foundations
laid by fields like text mining and the semantic web. Unfortunately,
this is not yet true for online applications like Wikis, Social
Networks, Web Portals, and Web 2.0 applications, even though they play
an important role in users’ everyday work.
The main goal of this thesis is the integration of existing and the
development of new services for text summarization, semantic
annotation, and provisioning of background information. These services
will be used for adaptive assistance in online applications. An example
of such assistance for a portal user is augmenting the portal page the
user is looking at with additional background information selected
based on the semantic annotation of the portal page and the semantic
description of user interests provided by the user model. An example of
adaptive assistance on a wiki page is providing the user a summary of
the page that includes only the information she is interested in.
During the course of this thesis, the student will have the
opportunity to spend a month at Concordia University in
Montréal, Canada and work closely with the team of Semantic
Software Lab on the development and integration of semantic
assistants.
